
FIFA has confirmed the appointment of an all-Portuguese refereeing team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final clash between Argentina and Switzerland.
João Pinheiro will serve as the centre referee for the encounter, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 11, at the Kansas City Stadium. He will be assisted by Bruno Jesus and Luciano Maia as assistant referees.
Canada’s Drew Fischer has been named the fourth official, while fellow Canadian Michael Barwegen will serve as the reserve assistant referee.

The appointment is in line with FIFA’s policy of assigning match officials from countries not directly involved in the fixture to maintain neutrality throughout the tournament.
The decision comes after FIFA previously faced criticism for appointing an all-Argentine officiating team to oversee the France versus Morocco quarter-final. However, the football governing body maintains that its regulations allow referees from participating nations to officiate matches, provided they are not assigned to games involving their own national teams.
Argentina and Switzerland will battle for a place in the semi-finals, with the winner advancing to face the victor of the Norway versus England quarter-final.
