Fire gutted 10 shops at Katsina Central Market, popularly called Fatima Baika Market, in the early hours of Tuesday. Traders said the blaze may have started from a solar-powered electricity inverter before spreading quickly through parts of the market.
The spokesperson for the Katsina State Fire Service, Rabe Audi, confirmed the incident and said a distress call was received shortly after the fire started. Firefighters were mobilised immediately, and their prompt response helped stop the flames from spreading further.

According to Audi, seven nearby shops and several goods were saved, while a Peugeot 406 vehicle was also rescued from the inferno. The affected shops included those selling food items, beverages, textiles, curtains, and other goods.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Officials advised the public, especially users of solar inverter systems, to ensure proper installation and maintenance to prevent similar outbreaks. A full assessment will be carried out to determine the extent of losses suffered by traders.
