The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, identified as Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, for allegedly impersonating a medical doctor and defrauding a woman of ₦500,000 under the pretense of securing employment for her children.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday in Calabar by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah.
According to the statement, the suspect was apprehended by officers attached to the Uwanse Division in Calabar South Local Government Area following a formal complaint lodged by Mrs. Edemawan Samuel.
The complainant alleged that Ekpeme falsely presented himself as a qualified medical doctor and convinced her to part with ₦500,000, promising to facilitate job placements for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly used the false claims to obtain money under fraudulent circumstances. Police authorities also disclosed that items believed to be linked to the crime were recovered during the arrest.

“The suspect was arrested over allegations bordering on impersonation, obtaining money by false pretence, and unlawful use of medical equipment,” the statement noted.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Rashid Afegbua, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter to uncover the full extent of the suspect’s activities and identify any possible accomplices or additional victims.
Police authorities assured that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, provided sufficient evidence is established.
Meanwhile, the Command reiterated its commitment to protecting residents from fraudulent schemes and urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
This incident comes amid growing concerns over cases of impersonation and job scams across the country, particularly involving individuals posing as professionals to exploit unsuspecting victims.
