
A tragic road accident along the Calabar–Itu Highway in Cross River State has claimed the lives of three students of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) and a staff member of the institution.
The fatal crash occurred on Friday night in the Odukpani Local Government Area when a coaster bus conveying students collided with a container truck while returning from an official assignment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
According to reports, about 24 students mostly members of the Students’ Union Government executive were involved in the accident.
The university, through its Public Relations Officer, confirmed the identities of the deceased as Solomon Uya, Director of Sports of the SUG; Lucky Erim, a Chemistry student and President of the Faculty of Physical Sciences Students’ Association; Favour Darlington of the Department of Educational Management; and Mr.
Anthony Arikpo, a staff member who was driving the vehicle.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Francisca Bassey, expressed deep shock over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

She also visited injured students receiving treatment in various hospitals alongside members of the university management team, assuring them of the institution’s full support.
Survivors of the crash are currently undergoing treatment in medical facilities, with the university closely monitoring their recovery.
Meanwhile, the Cross River State Police Command confirmed that the accident occurred at about 9:25 p.m. at Ikot Okon along the highway. Police spokesperson, ASP Sunday Akata, stated that the collision involved a coaster bus and a container truck, resulting in multiple casualties.
He added that emergency responders evacuated the injured victims to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited in the morgue.
The police further disclosed that the driver of the truck fled the scene, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend him as investigations continue.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution while driving, especially on highways, as inquiries into the cause of the accident remain ongoing.
