The Nigeria Customs Service intercepted 9,450 packages of cannabis valued at N18.96 billion at Tin-Can Island Port, officials said Thursday.
The drugs were found in a container shipped from Canada. Customs Area Controller Frank Onyeka said the container, marked HAMU 429961, was declared as used vehicles. A physical examination revealed 185 jumbo bags of cannabis weighing nearly five tons inside a 2010 Toyota Camry and a 2023 Chevrolet.
The seizure was part of a joint operation with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. The agencies signed a cooperation agreement on April 27, 2026, to share intelligence and conduct joint operations, Onyeka said.

The NCS has handed the drugs over to the NDLEA for investigation and prosecution.
Onyeka said the seizure shows Nigerian ports are not a “safe haven” for smugglers and that authorities have increased enforcement at entry points.
