Panic has gripped residents of Ila Ijesa in Atakunmosa West Local Government Area of Osun State following a violent attack on a mining site that left one labourer dead and several others missing.
The incident, which occurred on July 10, reportedly involved about 25 armed hoodlums who invaded the site and opened fire on workers. The deceased, identified simply as Abubakar, was said to have been shot while attempting to escape the chaos.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the attackers arrived heavily armed, with some allegedly dressed in uniforms similar to members of a local hunter group.
The assailants were said to have fired multiple gunshots, causing workers to flee for safety while some were forcefully taken away.

Residents disclosed that despite efforts to alert security operatives, no arrests have been made, raising concerns over the safety of lives and property in the area.
The body of the deceased has since been recovered and deposited in a morgue, while authorities continue investigations.
Meanwhile, community leaders and government representatives have called on the Inspector-General of Police to launch a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, as well as other reported attacks in the community.
The attack has heightened fear among residents, with many expressing worries over recurring violence and the absence of adequate security response in the area.
