A 13-year-old boy, Mubarak Mohammed, has reportedly died after accidentally firing a loaded Dane gun in Udubo village, Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at about 4:30 p.m., according to the Bauchi State Police Command.
The teenager was said to have entered the room of a 35-year-old hunter, identified as Suleiman Hamza, shortly after the hunter returned from an outing.
Police authorities said Hamza had allegedly left the loaded firearm inside the room before going out. The boy reportedly picked up the weapon and pulled the trigger, causing it to discharge and inflict fatal injuries.
The incident was reported to the police at about 8:45 p.m. by a 50-year-old resident of the community.
Following the report, detectives from the Gamawa Police Division visited the scene and evacuated the victim to the General Hospital, Gamawa. However, a doctor on duty confirmed that the boy had died.

His remains were subsequently released to his relatives for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The police said the hunter had been arrested, while preliminary investigations have been completed and the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, expressed sadness over the incident and urged firearm owners, particularly hunters, to exercise extreme caution when handling weapons.
He stressed the need for firearms to be securely stored and kept away from children to prevent avoidable deaths.
The police command also urged members of the public to provide timely and credible information that could assist authorities in protecting lives
