One of the 16 worshippers abducted during an attack on a Christ Apostolic Church in Eda Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, has died in captivity, while the remaining victims have regained their freedom after over two months.
The victims, who were kidnapped on April 28, 2026, during an evening church service, were released after enduring about 65 days in captivity.
They are currently receiving medical treatment at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti, under the care of the state government.
According to reports, armed attackers invaded the church, shot the pastor, and abducted 16 worshippers, including women and children, before taking them into the forest. The victims were reportedly moved across forest routes into neighboring Kwara State.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area, Alaba Dada, expressed mixed emotions over the victims’ release.
“I am happy they have regained their freedom, but saddened by the loss of one of them. We thank God for those who returned,” he said.
Dada disclosed that the victims were first taken to the General Hospital in Iye Ekiti before being transferred to EKSUTH for comprehensive treatment. He noted that many of them were in critical condition, unable to walk, injured from beatings, and severely malnourished.
A community leader, Ayodele Oni, described the release as a major relief, bringing an end to weeks of anxiety and psychological distress for families and residents.
The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed that the victims were rescued through coordinated, intelligence-led operations involving the police, military, Amotekun Corps, local hunters, and support from the state government.
Police spokesperson Sunday Abutu stated that the victims are undergoing medical evaluation and treatment, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has directed that all medical expenses of the rescued victims be fully covered by the state government.
He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and commended security agencies and stakeholders for their roles in securing the victims’ release.
The governor further urged the public to avoid politicizing the incident and instead support efforts to strengthen security across the state.
