Tragedy struck in Rivers State as two siblings lost their lives following a boat accident in Ahoada East Local Government Area.
The victims, identified as Mekalachi Gogochuri, 25, and his younger sister, Rejoice Gogochuri, 23, were among seven passengers onboard a canoe that capsized around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday in Ahoada Town.
The siblings were reportedly returning home from work when the incident occurred.
According to a family member, Abraham Gogochuri, the victims boarded the canoe to cross the river to their residence at Aliya (Over Bridge), an area currently affected by ongoing road construction.
He alleged that the boat was in a poor state and lacked essential safety measures.
“The canoe was leaking and had been patched with wrappers. There were no life jackets, and residents had no safer alternative due to the collapse of the ‘monkey bridge’ in the area,” he explained.
