The Oyo State Fire Services Agency successfully averted a major disaster after a petrol-laden tanker overturned in the Apake area of Ogbomoso on Thursday evening.
The incident involved a Howo trailer carrying about 66,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which lost control and somersaulted near a commercial hub close to Wema Bank.
According to a statement from the agency, the emergency call was received around 6:48 p.m. through a passerby and an official of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA). Firefighters from the Ogbomoso Zonal Command, led by Chief Fire Superintendent Dairo, responded swiftly to the scene.
Upon arrival, the team discovered that the tanker had spilled its contents after reportedly suffering brake failure.
To prevent a possible fire outbreak, the firefighters immediately deployed foam compounds to cover the spilled fuel and secured the area against ignition risks.

The scene was promptly cordoned off, while safety measures were put in place to protect lives and property. Their timely intervention ensured that normal vehicular movement and commercial activities were restored shortly after the situation was brought under control.
Fire service personnel remained on ground until after midnight to ensure complete safety before returning to base.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform and Chairman of the agency, Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged motorists especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles to prioritize routine maintenance.
He emphasized that regular vehicle checks, particularly on tankers and trucks, are critical in preventing avoidable accidents.
He also encouraged the public to promptly report emergencies and provide accurate information to aid swift response efforts.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property through proactive and timely emergency interventions across the state.
