
A fire outbreak caused by a suspected power surge on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, destroyed parts of a residential building at Oloje Housing Estate in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The incident occurred around 3:28 p.m. at Face Two of the estate and affected a building comprising about eight-bedroom flats.
According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the inferno severely damaged the sitting room and dining section of the building, causing panic among residents and neighbours in the area.

In a statement issued by the agency’s spokesperson, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, firefighters were said to have responded swiftly after receiving a distress call, preventing the fire from spreading to other parts of the building and nearby properties.
The incident involved a residential building consisting of about eight-bedroom flats. The fire affected the sitting room and dining area of the building,” the statement read.
The agency added that preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was triggered by a power surge.
No casualty was recorded during the incident.
Reacting to the development, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service urged residents to prioritise electrical safety in their homes and offices to prevent similar incidents.
The agency advised members of the public to switch off electrical appliances when not in use and ensure proper maintenance of electrical installations to avoid fire outbreaks linked to electrical faults and sudden power fluctuations.
Residents were also encouraged to promptly report fire emergencies to the nearest fire station for immediate intervention.
