
Three health workers have lost their lives in a tragic road accident along the Oke-Onigbin–Omu-Aran highway in Kwara State shortly after participating in the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration.
The victims, who were members of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria from Ekiti Local Government Area, were returning from Ilorin where they had attended the May Day event when the fatal incident occurred.
According to reports, the crash happened at about 3:00 p.m. and involved a commercial Mazda bus carrying seven passengers.
Preliminary findings revealed that the accident was caused by a burst tyre while the vehicle was at high speed, leading the driver to lose control.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that three female passengers died instantly, while other occupants sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the scene, evacuating the injured to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were also recovered.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of road safety, urging drivers to avoid excessive speed and ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent such tragedies.
Reacting to the incident, local government officials and health authorities described the loss as devastating, noting that the deceased were dedicated professionals who had been actively contributing to public health efforts, including immunisation campaigns.
The injured victims are currently receiving medical care, while sympathies continue to pour in for the families and colleagues of the deceased.
