The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has shut down a rice milling company in Kano State over alleged environmental violations linked to excessive dust emissions and offensive odour.
The enforcement action, carried out on Monday, followed complaints from residents who accused the facility of polluting the environment and disrupting daily activities in the surrounding community.
According to the agency’s North-West Zonal Director, Abdulraheem Mudashir, investigations revealed that the company failed to comply with the National Environmental Regulations on Food, Beverages and Tobacco Sector, 2009, especially provisions relating to pollution control and permit conditions.

Mudashir disclosed that NESREA had earlier issued three compliance and abatement notices to the company, but management allegedly failed to take corrective measures.
He stated that the factory continued to release excessive dust into nearby communities while also generating strong odours affecting residents.
“The company failed to put in place adequate measures to control dust emissions from affecting surrounding communities,” he said, warning that industries that violate environmental regulations risk being sealed.
NESREA said the move forms part of efforts to enforce environmental standards and protect public health across the country.
