The death toll from a deadly bandit attack on farmers in Zamfara State has risen to 23, following the recovery of more bodies from the scene.
The attack occurred in Sauna District, Talata Mafara Local Government Area, where suspected armed bandits stormed farmlands in broad daylight on Thursday, opening fire on farmers working in their fields.
Initial reports had placed the number of casualties at 16, but community sources confirmed that additional victims were later discovered, pushing the death toll higher.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the assailants arrived in groups on motorcycles and began shooting indiscriminately without warning, leaving several farmers dead on the spot.

“They came suddenly and started firing at anyone they saw. It was a horrific scene,” a resident, who requested anonymity for security reasons, disclosed.
The victims were reportedly buried in a mass grave at the palace of the district head shortly after the attack.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, and efforts to reach the Zamfara State Police Command spokesperson were unsuccessful.
This tragic incident adds to the growing wave of attacks on farming communities across Zamfara State, where residents continue to face persistent threats while carrying out their daily livelihoods.
