Michael Olise etched his name into World Cup history despite France’s thrilling 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff on Saturday.
The Bayern Munich attacking midfielder produced two assists during the high-scoring encounter, taking his total to seven assists in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That achievement saw him surpass the previous record of six assists in a single tournament, which had been held by Brazilian legend Pele since the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

Olise’s creativity was one of France’s brightest highlights throughout the competition. Five of his seven assists were converted by captain Kylian Mbappe, setting a new tournament record for the most goals created by one player for a single teammate in a World Cup campaign.
Although Olise did not score during the tournament, his vision, passing ability and consistency made him one of the standout performers in the competition.
France, however, ended their World Cup journey on a disappointing note after conceding six goals to England in an entertaining third-place playoff.
Despite the defeat, Olise’s record-breaking feat ensures his 2026 World Cup campaign will be remembered as one of the finest creative displays in the tournament’s history, eclipsing a milestone that had stood for more than five decades.
