Arsenal produced a determined second-half performance to come from behind and defeat Lyon 2–1 in the first leg of their Women’s Champions League semi-final, taking a crucial advantage into the return fixture.
Lyon made a bright start to the encounter and opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Jule Brand. The attacker showed excellent individual skill, cutting in from the left, evading a challenge, and firing a precise shot into the bottom corner beyond Arsenal goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar.
Arsenal responded with pressure and attacking intent but were initially unable to break through a disciplined Lyon defence. The hosts thought they had earned a penalty when Kim Little went down in the box, but VAR ruled that Lyon captain Wendie Renard had made a clean challenge.
The Gunners continued to push after the break, with Olivia Smith going close, only to be denied by Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler from close range.

Arsenal’s equaliser arrived in the 58th minute under controversial circumstances. Mariona Caldentey delivered a dangerous set-piece into the area, and under pressure, Endler failed to deal with the ball, which eventually went into the net.
Despite Lyon’s protests claiming a foul in the build-up, VAR allowed the goal to stand.
The match became more open as both sides searched for a winner. Lyon came close to retaking the lead when Kadidiatou Diani struck the crossbar after a swift attack.
However, Arsenal completed the comeback late in the game after a defensive mix-up between Endler and Lyon defender Ingrid Engen. Olivia Smith reacted quickest, calmly slotting the ball into an empty net to seal a 2–1 victory for the English side.
The result gives Arsenal a narrow advantage heading into the second leg at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium on Saturday, 2 May.
