Police have arrested a man accused of allegedly threatening and intimidating his daughter-in-law following the death of her husband in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
The arrest was confirmed by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), which said it intervened after receiving reports that the widow was allegedly being harassed and faced attempts by members of her late husband’s family to seize his property.
According to the agency, the widow, identified simply as Tosin, alleged that she had been subjected to threats to her life, physical assault and intimidation after the recent death of her husband. She also informed the agency that she had reported the matter to the Owutu Police Division.
The DSVA said it immediately engaged the investigating officers handling the case, adding that preliminary feedback from the police confirmed the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, who remains in custody while investigations continue.
Lawyers representing the widow under the Project Protect Widows Initiative alleged that she and her children were forced out of their matrimonial home just eight days after her husband’s death by her father-in-law, who allegedly sought to take control of the deceased’s property.

The legal team further claimed that the deceased’s brother and his wife were also involved in the alleged attempt to dispossess the widow, alleging that some of the late man’s belongings had already been shared while efforts were being made to sell his vehicles.
The lawyers maintained that the widow is the deceased’s legally married wife and is entitled to the protection of the law, insisting that any property allegedly taken or sold unlawfully would be recovered through legal means.
The Lagos State Government, through the DSVA, reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of the widow and her children while working with relevant authorities to ensure justice is served.
