
The death toll from the Warri–Itakpe train derailment has risen to five, the Nigerian Railway Corporation has confirmed.
NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa said on Tuesday that emergency responders were deployed immediately to the scene. Injured passengers were evacuated to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while investigations into the cause of the accident are underway.
Opeifa assured that safety assessments across the rail network are being intensified to prevent a recurrence. Relevant technical teams have been mobilised to determine the factors that led to the derailment.

He added that authorities are also working to support affected families, while efforts continue to restore normal operations along the corridor.
The derailment occurred on Monday along the Warri–Itakpe line, one of Nigeria’s major standard gauge routes serving both passenger and freight movement across multiple states.
