Tunisia’s World Cup campaign has hit crisis point after the national federation moved to sack head coach Sabri Lamouchi following a 5-1 loss to Sweden in their Group F opener. The decision came less than 24 hours after the heavy defeat at Monterrey Stadium on June 14, 2026.
Federation officials confirmed that discussions were held immediately after the match, with a source telling AFP that a final call would be made “in the next few hours.” Popular transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano later posted that Lamouchi’s dismissal was official, stating that Mondher Kebaier would take charge on an interim basis.
Lamouchi had only been appointed in January 2026 and was facing his second World Cup as a head coach after leading Ivory Coast in 2014. Kebaier, who managed Tunisia between 2019 and 2022, is already with the squad in Monterrey.

The defeat leaves Tunisia with a steep climb to reach the knockout stage in their seventh World Cup appearance. They face Japan next Saturday in Monterrey, before meeting the Netherlands in Kansas City on June 25. Japan opened their tournament with a 2-2 draw against the Dutch.
For Tunisia, the focus now shifts to stabilizing the squad under Kebaier as they look to avoid another early exit.
