Switzerland were left frustrated after conceding a late equaliser in a 1–1 draw against Qatar in their opening Group B match at the 2026 World Cup.
Switzerland national football team took control early in Santa Clara, California, and were rewarded in the 17th minute when Breel Embolo converted from the penalty spot after a reckless challenge by goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada on Remo Freuler.
Despite dominating possession and registering 26 shots, Switzerland failed to extend their lead, repeatedly wasting promising opportunities as Qatar stayed within reach.
Qatar, who struggled for rhythm after a disrupted build-up to the tournament, gradually grew into the match. Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time when veteran defender Boualem Khoukhi rose to head home a 94th-minute equaliser, sparking jubilant celebrations on the Qatar bench.
The result marked Qatar’s first point at the tournament and a morale-boosting start for head coach Julen Lopetegui, who was taking charge of his first World Cup match.
For Switzerland and manager Murat Yakin, the draw will feel like a missed opportunity after a dominant display that they failed to convert into a win.

Key moments also included early chances at both ends, with defensive lapses from Manuel Akanji nearly punished, and late efforts from Granit Xhaka and Gregor Kobel unable to prevent Qatar’s dramatic equaliser.
Qatar national football team now turn their attention to their next group match, while Switzerland face a quick reset after a result that felt more like a defeat than a draw.
