A female police officer and a pedestrian have died after a truck lost control and crashed into shops at New Mile 3 Market along the Gombe–Yola highway on Wednesday.
The DAF truck, registered XH 122 GME and carrying bags of grain, reportedly suffered brake failure before slamming into roadside shops, traders, and passersby. Two other people, including the driver, sustained injuries in the incident.
Witnesses said the driver was coming from the Taraba area when the brakes failed, causing the vehicle to veer off course and hit motorcycles, pedestrians, and several shops.
The Gombe State Police Command confirmed the details, identifying the deceased officer as Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina of the Communications Department. The second victim was an unidentified male pedestrian. Police spokesperson Buhari Abdullahi said early investigations showed the driver was trying to enter a filling station through a one-way route when the brakes failed.
