The Nigerian Army has intensified its crackdown on criminal elements in the South-East, successfully overrunning suspected IPOB/ESN strongholds and dismantling a kidnapping network during coordinated operations.
The operations, conducted under Operation Eastern Sanity, targeted key insurgent hideouts across the region, significantly weakening the group’s operational capacity.
According to a statement by the Army, troops backed by superior firepower, intelligence, and joint-force collaboration have continued to mount sustained pressure on the group, exposing what it described as a “weakening structure and declining combat capability.”
On April 14, 2026, troops of Sector 1, in collaboration with the Air Component of Operation Udoka, carried out a precision strike and clearance operation in Ajali Forest, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The offensive reportedly forced suspected IPOB/ESN operatives into a chaotic retreat, abandoning critical assets, including an anti-tank Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
The Army noted that the failed deployment of the device highlights growing desperation and reduced operational effectiveness among the group.
The explosive device was successfully secured and neutralized by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, preventing potential casualties.

Troops have since established dominance in the area, continuing aggressive clearance operations.
Several hideouts were destroyed using heavy equipment, including bulldozers and chainsaws, effectively stripping the criminals of cover and disrupting their ability to regroup.
In a related intelligence-led operation, troops of the 82 Division Garrison stationed in Adani, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, acting on credible intelligence from the Department of State Services (DSS), intercepted ransom proceeds linked to a kidnapping syndicate.
The raid led to the arrest of a suspected kidnap kingpin, further revealing the group’s reliance on criminal activities for funding.
Security operatives recovered a pump-action rifle and ₦2,000,000 in cash, believed to be ransom proceeds. The suspect and recovered items have been handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation aimed at apprehending other members of the criminal network.
The Nigerian Army stated that the operation has further degraded the operational and financial strength of IPOB/ESN elements.
It reassured citizens of its commitment to eliminating all forms of insurgency and criminality, while urging continued public cooperation to sustain ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability across the South-East.
