
A 41-year-old man, Bassey Ekpo, has been arrested by the Cross River State Police Command over the alleged setting ablaze of a residence in the 8 Miles area of Calabar.
The incident was reportedly reported on Friday, September 11, 2026, by the occupant of the house, Ekemini Stephen, who said he was in church when a neighbour called to inform him that his residence was on fire.
With assistance from neighbours, Ekpo was apprehended and taken to the Ikot Omin Police Division.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly told investigators during preliminary questioning that he was sent by his 61-year-old mother, who is currently at large and has been identified as the alleged instigator.
Police operatives have visited the scene and taken photographs as part of the investigation. The command said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish whether other individuals were involved.
The police assured residents that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
