Nigerian soldiers serving in the 241 Recce Model Battalion in Nguru, Yobe State, have raised concerns over the alleged non-payment of their monthly operational allowance for participation in counter-insurgency operations against Boko Haram.
The soldiers claimed that although a ₦45,000 monthly allowance is reportedly approved for personnel engaged in active anti-terror operations, many troops permanently stationed at the battalion say they do not receive the payment.
A military source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the battalion, located in western Yobe State, remains actively involved in ongoing security operations in the North-East region.
According to the source, only soldiers temporarily deployed on special assignments or attached to other units are said to benefit from the allowance, while those permanently based at the Nguru formation are excluded.
The soldiers expressed frustration over what they described as an unfair system, insisting that all personnel in the unit face similar risks in the fight against insurgency linked to Boko Haram.

They further alleged that the payment structure creates a situation where allowances stop once troops return from external deployment, even though operations continue in their base area.
The aggrieved personnel described the situation as demoralising, warning that welfare challenges could affect morale in ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Nigerian Army spokesperson, Colonel Onyechi Appolonia Anele, were unsuccessful as calls and messages were not returned at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, security operations in Yobe State continue amid recurring attacks in parts of the North-East.
Recent reports of coordinated attacks in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area, have further heightened concerns over security conditions in the region, with casualties recorded among security personnel during clashes with insurgents.
Residents described the incidents as some of the most severe in recent times, noting that gun battles lasted several hours before the attackers withdrew.
Authorities have continued to assure the public of intensified operations aimed at restoring stability and bringing perpetrators of attacks to justice.
