The family of a teacher killed during the abduction of pupils and staff in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has expressed deep sorrow, even as other families celebrate the safe return of their loved ones.
Michael Olugbade Oyedokun, one of the victims of the May 15 school attack, was among those who lost their lives when gunmen invaded multiple schools in the area.
While the recent rescue of abducted pupils and teachers has brought relief across the state, Oyedokun’s family says their pain remains unresolved.
Speaking on behalf of the family, his niece, Oluwabukolami, shared an emotional message on social media, noting that although they are happy for the rescued victims, their own loss is permanent.
“They are finally home. My heart rejoices with every family reunited after weeks of fear and uncertainty. But as others celebrate, our family mourns,” she wrote.
She added that her uncle’s death has left an irreplaceable void, saying, “Our joy is incomplete because one chair at our table will remain empty forever. He will never come home.”
The tragic incident occurred when armed men attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Oriire, abducting several pupils and teachers.
During the invasion, Oyedokun and another teacher, Esiyan Adegboye, were killed.

Following weeks in captivity, security operatives successfully rescued the remaining victims in a coordinated operation. Authorities confirmed that several suspects have been arrested, while others were neutralised during the rescue effort.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, described the development as a major relief, noting that the victims had endured over seven weeks in captivity.
The Presidency also commended security agencies for the successful operation, which was reportedly carried out without conceding to kidnappers’ demands.
Despite the successful rescue, Oyedokun’s family says the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the human cost of insecurity.
“Today, we celebrate those who returned, while remembering the one who never did. Rest in peace, Uncle Michael. You will never be forgotten,” Oluwabukolami concluded.
The incident continues to spark conversations around school safety and the need for stronger security measures to protect lives across the country.
