At least 18 people have been bitten by a dog suspected to be infected with rabies in Garko Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident reportedly began in Garko town, where the dog attacked 11 people before moving into neighbouring communities.
Seven more people were later bitten in Raba, Kadage, Gurjiya and Dausai, according to the Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS), Garko Division.
The NFSS has launched a search for the suspected rabid dog and two other dogs believed to have been infected.
The service said the three animals could pose a serious risk of spreading rabies to residents and other animals in the affected communities.
Officers led by the Divisional Forest Officer, Auwalu Muhammad, have been deployed to the affected areas to locate and neutralise the suspected infected dogs.

An NFSS spokesperson, CSF Usman Abdullahi Umar, said the operation was aimed at preventing further attacks and reducing the possibility of rabies spreading.
The service urged residents of Garko and surrounding communities to remain vigilant and report stray dogs or animals showing possible signs of rabies to security authorities.
Residents who are bitten by a dog or come into contact with an animal suspected of carrying rabies were also advised to seek immediate medical attention.
The NFSS said its officers would continue the search until the threat is brought under control.
