The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has commenced a five-working-day warning strike at Sokoto State University over unpaid salary arrears, allowances and other outstanding staff entitlements.
The industrial action, which began on Monday, November 2, 2026, has led to the shutdown of services at the institution, following the expiration of a 14-working-day ultimatum issued to the Sokoto State Government on October 14.
In a statement jointly signed by the SSANU chapter Chairman, Ismail Bala Muhammed, and Secretary, Mansur Ahmad, the union said the strike became necessary after several meetings and appeals to government officials failed to produce a satisfactory resolution.
Among its major demands are the payment of arrears arising from the 25 per cent salary increase, implementation of the 35 per cent Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance, annual salary increments for eligible members and release of outstanding check-off dues.
The dispute reportedly intensified after a government committee meeting on October 9, where the state government rejected the payment of the 25 per cent salary increment arrears and proposed that the 35 per cent allowance should commence in January 2027, subject to budgetary availability.

However, SSANU rejected the proposal, insisting that its members’ outstanding entitlements should be addressed without further delay.
The union appealed to Governor Ahmed Aliyu to intervene personally and approve its demands to prevent the dispute from escalating.
It also called on traditional rulers, parents, students and other stakeholders to prevail on the government to resolve the disagreement.
SSANU warned that failure by the state government to meet its demands within the five working days of the warning strike would result in an indefinite shutdown of services at Sokoto State University.
