A 28-year-old man, identified as Ezechi Ekenechukwu, has been killed, while several others sustained injuries after suspected herdsmen attacked Ukpata community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The attack reportedly occurred on Friday, October 29, 2026, when heavily armed assailants invaded the community and unleashed violence on residents.
Ekenechukwu, who was said to be the breadwinner of his family, was reportedly shot dead during the assault. Several other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
Residents have expressed fears of further attacks, particularly as no arrests had been reported as of Monday, November 2, despite the casualties and reported threats against the community.
Human rights lawyer, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, condemned the attack, describing it as a horrific assault on the people of Ukpata. He called on the Enugu State Government to take immediate steps to protect residents and address the security situation.

Ejiofor also criticised the government’s focus on political activities amid growing insecurity in rural communities, urging Governor Peter Mbah to visit the affected community and assess the situation firsthand.
He further called for improved security operations, better equipment for forest guards and intelligence-driven interventions to prevent further attacks.
The lawyer warned that the continued presence of armed men in the farmlands and surrounding forests of Uzo-Uwani could embolden further violence if decisive action is not taken.
Meanwhile, efforts to obtain comments from the Enugu State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, reportedly did not respond to calls and messages seeking clarification on the incident.
The attack has renewed concerns over the safety of rural communities in Enugu State and the urgent need for stronger security measures to protect lives and property.
