Former Real Madrid defender Jose Emilio Santamaria has passed away at the age of 96, the club confirmed on Wednesday, marking the end of an era for one of football’s most iconic generations.
Santamaria, a commanding centre-back, joined Madrid in 1957 from Uruguay’s Club Nacional de Football and quickly became a key figure during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Known for his defensive strength and leadership, he played a vital role in establishing Madrid’s dominance in European football.
During his time at the Santiago Bernabéu, he won four European Cups (1958, 1959, 1960, and 1966) and six La Liga titles, contributing to a legacy that helped define the club’s global reputation.

Born in Uruguay, Santamaria initially represented his country at international level, earning 25 caps before later becoming a naturalised Spaniard.
He went on to play for Spain at the 1962 FIFA World Cup and later served as the national team’s coach, including during the 1982 FIFA World Cup.
His passing has been met with tributes across the football world, celebrating a career that left a lasting mark on both club and international football.
