The Catholic Diocese of Otukpo in Benue State has confirmed the safe return of seminarian Kelvin Ochai, who regained his freedom after escaping from the gunmen who abducted him.
Ochai was kidnapped at Asa III in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, sparking concern among members of the church and residents of the area.
In a statement released by the Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, the church said the seminarian escaped from captivity on the evening of July 31, 2026.
According to the statement, after escaping from his captors, Ochai made his way to Aliade in Gwer East Local Government Area, where he was safely reunited with his family. The diocese confirmed that he returned unharmed.

The church attributed his safe return to God’s protection and the prayers offered by Christians and other well-wishers throughout the period of his captivity.
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Most Rev. Michael Ekwoyi Apochi, expressed gratitude to priests, religious faithful, parishioners, and everyone who prayed and showed support during the difficult period.
The diocese said the seminarian’s safe return has brought relief and joy to his family, the church, and members of the community who had been hoping for his freedom.
