Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have rescued two women from an angry mob in Uyo, the state capital, after they were allegedly accused of an offence that had not been verified by authorities.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, said the incident happened on Tuesday morning along Ring Road 3 in Uyo. According to her, the women were stripped and assaulted by the mob, which attempted to lynch them before police officers intervened.
John explained that the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, witnessed the incident while heading to work and quickly alerted security operatives after noticing that one of the victims had sustained serious injuries.
Police officers reportedly arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the distress call, dispersed the crowd, rescued the women and rushed them to a hospital for treatment. Authorities said the victims are responding positively to medical care.
