The Kogi State Police Command will begin enforcing the mandatory use of reflective jackets and identification cards for all commercial motorcyclists from July 1, 2026. The move is part of efforts to strengthen security and make it easier to identify operators across the state.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, every commercial motorcyclist must wear a reflective jacket with a unique serial number and carry a valid rider’s identification card while working. The directive applies to all operators in the state.
To make identification easier, the jackets will be colour-coded by senatorial district. Riders in Kogi Central will wear yellow, Kogi West will use blue, and Kogi East will wear red.
Commissioner of Police CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi has ordered Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to enforce the directive strictly but professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights. He warned officers against extortion or harassment during the exercise, stating that such conduct would not be tolerated.

Any rider who violates the rule will be arrested, and the motorcycle will be impounded. The bike will only be released after the rider fully complies with the requirements.
The Command also advised the public to note the serial numbers and identification details of motorcyclists they patronise. Officials said this information could help security agencies during investigations.
Commercial motorcyclists and other stakeholders have been urged to cooperate with the directive to improve safety and accountability in the state.
