
The Imo State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of a 19-year-old pedestrian, Chibuike Friday, who was fatally struck during an alleged illegal street racing incident in Owerri, the state capital.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening at about 6:30 p.m. along Okigwe Road, directly in front of Imo State University (IMSU).
According to police reports, the victim was attempting to cross the road when he was hit by a speeding vehicle reportedly involved in an unauthorized street race.
Another individual, identified as Bright Ukwuoma, sustained injuries in the crash and is currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Henry Okoye, disclosed that the driver of the vehicle, 30-year-old Michael Chibuike Dike from Oguta Local Government Area, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect was driving a Lexus ES350 at high speed while allegedly participating in a street racing activity when he lost control after hitting the victim. The vehicle subsequently struck the second victim, leading to further injuries.
Police officers from the Orji Division responded swiftly to the scene, apprehended the suspect, and prevented him from being attacked by an angry mob.

The body of the deceased has been deposited in a morgue for autopsy, while investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, CP Audu Bosso, has condemned the reckless act and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
He also wished the injured victim a speedy recovery and assured the public that justice will be served.
Authorities have reiterated warnings against illegal street racing, excessive speeding, and other dangerous driving behaviors, stressing that such actions put innocent lives at risk.
In a related response, the Imo State Ministry of Youth Development and Talent Hunt described the incident as unfortunate and avoidable, emphasizing that no form of entertainment should come at the cost of human life.
The police have confirmed that the suspect will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
