The Bauchi State Police Command has foiled an alleged attempt by suspected cattle rustlers to steal eight cows in Darazo Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred at about 2:58 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after a concerned resident alerted the police to suspicious activities involving the movement of cattle.
According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, the suspects were allegedly loading the cows into a Chevrolet saloon car with registration number DAS 452 NE when police operatives attached to the Darazo Division arrived at the scene.
Two of the cows had already been loaded into the vehicle, while six others were reportedly tied nearby and awaiting transportation.
On sighting the approaching police officers, the suspects abandoned the vehicle and the cattle and fled into the darkness.
The police subsequently recovered the Chevrolet car with two cows inside, while the remaining six cows were found tethered close to the scene.

All eight cows and the vehicle were taken into police custody as exhibits.
The command later traced the rightful owner of the cattle and released the animals to him on bond, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commended the resident whose timely information helped prevent the alleged theft.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies, assuring the public of the command’s continued efforts to protect lives, property and livestock across the state.
