Operatives of the Zone One Police Headquarters in Kano have arrested a 32-year-old man, Richard Peter, for allegedly orchestrating a fake ushering job scheme that targeted students of Bayero University Kano.
The suspect, reportedly from Lagos State, was apprehended following a petition submitted to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police by a group of students led by Clementina Paul, who accused him of defrauding them under the guise of offering legitimate ushering employment.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of Zone One, DSP Abdullahi Hussaini, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, working with an accomplice identified as Faith Dauda, allegedly invited 38 female students to Mairabo Hotel in the Sabon Gari area of Kano on May 10, 2026.
Upon arrival, the victims were reportedly instructed to change into working attire and deposit their mobile phones and personal belongings, under the pretense that phones were not permitted at the event venue.
However, the situation reportedly turned out to be a scam. The police stated that the suspect ordered meals worth about ₦6,000 per person for the students and later disappeared without settling the bill.
When the victims returned, they discovered that their phones and other valuables had been stolen.

The police confirmed that 29 mobile phones and other stolen items were recovered from the suspect.
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone One, Garba Ahmed, commended the swift response of operatives and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating fraud and protecting residents from criminal exploitation.
