South Africa head coach, Hugo Broos, has revealed the key reason behind Bafana Bafana’s elimination from the ongoing FIFA World Cup, following their narrow 1-0 defeat to Canada.
Speaking after the last-32 clash in Los Angeles, the 74-year-old Belgian tactician admitted that his side struggled to cope with Canada’s physical strength and pace, which ultimately proved decisive.
Broos noted that modern football goes beyond technical ability, emphasizing that power and speed played a crucial role in the outcome of the match.
“Football today is not just about technique.
There is power and speed, and we currently lack those qualities. Canada had the advantage in that regard,” he said.
South Africa’s hopes were dashed in dramatic fashion when Stephen Eustaquio scored a stoppage-time winner in the 92nd minute, sealing Canada’s progression to the round of 16.

The veteran coach, who had earlier hinted at retiring after the tournament, suggested he may reconsider his decision. He stated that it would be unwise to make a final call while still dealing with the disappointment of the loss.
“It is not the right moment to decide my future. I will take time to reflect before making any decision,” Broos added.
Despite the exit, Broos has been widely praised for revitalizing South African football since taking charge in 2021.
Under his leadership, the team qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 16 years and reached the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
South Africa will now shift focus to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where they are set to face Kenya, Guinea, and Eritrea in Group D.
