The Nigeria Union of Teachers (Nigeria Union of Teachers) has dismissed calls for the closure of schools in Borno State, despite ongoing insecurity and recent cases of student abductions, insisting that shutting down schools would amount to giving terrorists a psychological victory.
Speaking through its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Yusuf Tom, the union reaffirmed its stance in an interview stating that teachers across the state remain committed to continuing academic activities despite the security risks.
Tom, relaying the position of the Borno State chapter leadership, emphasized that closing schools would only serve the interests of insurgents who aim to disrupt education and instill fear in communities.
He maintained that education must not be sacrificed to terror threats, but rather protected through stronger security measures.

“We did not order the closure of schools in Borno State. If you close schools, it is a victory for fear,” he said, stressing that teachers will continue to report to duty as part of efforts to resist disruption of learning.
He also disclosed that the union is planning a nationwide rally to demand urgent government action over rising abductions affecting schools and communities, particularly calling for the rescue of pupils from Mussa Primary and Secondary School in Askira Uba.
According to him, education is a fundamental human right, and both learners and teachers deserve adequate protection.
The union urged security agencies and relevant authorities to intensify efforts to safeguard schools and ensure the safe return of abducted students and staff across affected states.
