The Kano State Police Command has arrested 10 suspected members of an alleged interstate motor vehicle theft syndicate and recovered 12 vehicles believed to have been stolen.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, disclosed this during a press briefing at the Tarauni Area Command in Kano.
Bakori said the suspects were arrested in separate operations conducted by the Command’s Special Intervention Squad as part of efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating across state borders.
According to him, five suspects were initially arrested in Adamawa State on September 7, following credible intelligence, during which a white Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 was recovered.
He said further investigation and intelligence operations led to the recovery of 10 additional stolen vehicles in different locations across Kano and neighbouring states.
The commissioner added that another five suspects were arrested on September 12 at Kwankwasiyya City Quarters, Tarauni, Kano, where they were allegedly found with a stolen white Toyota Hilux bearing registration number KATSINA 03L-02KT. This brought the total number of suspects arrested to 10 and the vehicles recovered to 12.
Bakori said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects had allegedly operated across Kano, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe and other neighbouring states.
He said the suspects had also allegedly explained how the syndicate stole vehicles, concealed them in different locations and moved them across state borders for sale.
The police commissioner said investigation was still ongoing, while efforts were being made to arrest other fleeing members of the alleged syndicate and recover more stolen vehicles.
The recovered vehicles include Toyota Corolla LE, Pontiac Vibe, Mercedes-Benz GLK 350, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Sienna, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Tucson and another Toyota Hilux.

Bakori expressed concern that 11 of the 12 recovered vehicles were unregistered, noting that the lack of registration had made it difficult for the police to trace some of their owners.
He urged vehicle owners to comply with registration requirements, warning that unregistered vehicles could make it easier for criminals to conceal stolen property.
The commissioner said the Command had strengthened intelligence gathering and repositioned its Violent Crime Response Unit and Special Intervention Squad to respond to cases involving violent crime, vehicle theft, kidnapping and other security threats.
He added that the police would continue working with neighbouring commands to prevent criminals from taking advantage of state boundaries.
Bakori also appealed to members of the public to report suspicious movements involving vehicles and persons.
He said owners of the recovered vehicles could contact the investigating police officer, the Police Public Relations Officer or the Officer in Charge of the Special Intervention Squad at the Tarauni Area Command, Kano, with valid proof of ownership.
The commissioner said the suspects would be charged to court after the completion of the investigation.
