The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has appointed Mrs. Ramatu O. Ibrahim as its Acting Bursar, three days after the university’s substantive Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, was reportedly shot dead in Zamfara State.
Ibrahim’s appointment took effect on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, following approval by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, with the concurrence of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Malam Isa Yuguda, CON.
The appointment was announced in a public notice signed by NOUN’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr. Oladipo Ajayi.
According to the university, the decision was made to ensure continuity, stability and effective leadership in its financial administration following Marafa’s death.
Marafa reportedly died on Sunday, September 6, after he was shot while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State. NOUN described his death as sudden and untimely but did not disclose further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or identify those responsible.
The university had described the late Bursar as a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN community, noting that his death was a profound loss to the institution.

In a statement following his death, NOUN said Marafa served with commitment, professionalism and integrity, adding that his contributions to the university’s financial administration and institutional development would be remembered.
Prior to her appointment, Ibrahim served as Deputy Bursar, Treasury. She has worked in several key operational units of the Bursary Department and has extensive experience in accounting, financial management, treasury operations and administrative processes.
In her most recent position, she provided leadership and oversight of the university’s treasury operations.
NOUN management expressed confidence that Ibrahim’s experience and knowledge of the institution’s financial systems would enable her to effectively oversee the Bursary Department and maintain efficient, transparent and accountable financial services.
The Vice-Chancellor congratulated Ibrahim on her appointment and wished her a successful tenure.
The university also called on members of the NOUN community to extend the necessary cooperation and support to the Acting Bursar as she assumes her new responsibilities.
