An Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations at the State House, Peter Onwubuariri, has died in Kano at the age of 48 after a prolonged illness.
Onwubuariri, a veteran journalist and former staff member of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reportedly died on Monday evening while receiving medical treatment in Kano.
His wife, Catherine Ezinna Onwubuariri, confirmed his death.
According to reports, the deceased had been undergoing treatment for about a month at the Kano Cancer Hospital under a treatment authorisation from the Kano State Government.
His remains were released on Tuesday by the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) for transportation to Owerri, Imo State, where he is expected to be buried.
The remains were formally handed over to Oche Echeija Egwa, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations at the State House, who received them on behalf of the Presidential Spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.

The handover was witnessed by Kano State Government officials, including the state Commissioner for Information, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, and the Chairman of the Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sulaiman Dederi.
Reacting to the development, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, expressed condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Presidential Media Unit and the family of the deceased.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, Governor Yusuf described Onwubuariri as a thoroughbred professional who made significant contributions to the reputation management of the Presidency.
The governor also commiserated with the deceased’s family, colleagues and associates, while praying for the repose of his soul and strength for his loved ones to bear the loss.
