The Niger State Police Command has launched an investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners who reportedly died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 17, 2026, after some individuals arrested over alleged illegal mining were found dead at the NSCDC Niger State Command.
The Commissioner of Police, Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, ordered the investigation and directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Minna, to take over the case.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, the investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and determine what led to the incident.
The police called on family members, relatives and members of the public who have credible information that could assist the investigation to provide such information to the SCID in Minna.
Elleman also appealed for calm and urged relatives and acquaintances of the deceased to remain law-abiding and cooperate with investigators.
He assured the public that the command would conduct a thorough investigation into the matter while reaffirming its commitment to human rights and accountability in the activities of law enforcement agencies.
