The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched an investigation into the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Etimbuk Daniel, at the orientation camp in Awgu, Enugu State.
The investigation follows allegations that the corps member’s death may have been linked to substandard or falsified medicines administered to him at the camp clinic.
In a statement issued on Sunday, NAFDAC disclosed that its officials had visited the clinic, interviewed medical personnel and other staff, and collected samples of the medications administered to the deceased for laboratory analysis.
According to the agency, preliminary findings indicated that Daniel was taken to the clinic on October 7, 2026, by two fellow corps members with symptoms suggestive of severe malaria. He was reportedly treated with an intramuscular antimalarial drug and other supportive medications before being discharged the following morning with oral medications.
Daniel returned to the clinic on October 10, complaining of pain in his right thigh. Medical personnel reportedly observed that he was sweating profusely and had dangerously low blood pressure.

NAFDAC stated that his condition worsened despite treatment with intravenous fluids. He was subsequently referred to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, where he reportedly fell into a coma around the time of arrival. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
The agency added that the attending doctor was later informed by Daniel’s friend that the corps member had been vomiting for two days following his initial admission.
According to NAFDAC, the doctors believed the likely cause of death was acute kidney injury resulting from severe dehydration and shock.
The agency, however, said the medications administered to Daniel had also been used to treat other patients at the camp, who reportedly recovered. It stressed that the investigation was ongoing and that laboratory analysis would help determine the quality of the drugs involved.
Daniel was the immediate past president of the Students’ Union Government of Akwa Ibom State University.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Senate has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, following a motion calling for a review of medical services at NYSC orientation camps nationwide.
NAFDAC has yet to announce the final findings of its investigation.
