Inter Miami have appointed Guillermo Hoyos as their new head coach, with the Argentine tactician insisting his long-standing relationship with Lionel Messi will not interfere with his professional duties.
The 62-year-old was officially unveiled on Wednesday following the departure of Javier Mascherano, who stepped down for personal reasons just four months after leading the club to its first MLS Cup triumph.
Hoyos, who previously served as the club’s sporting director, shares a deep history with Messi dating back over two decades to their time at Barcelona’s youth academy, where he played a key role in the superstar’s early development.
Despite their close bond, Hoyos made it clear during his first press conference that professionalism will come first.
“Friendship is non-negotiable. We share a friendship that spans many years,” Hoyos said.

“However, that does not mean we will be constantly hovering over him or in his face every single day.”
Initial statements from the club suggested Hoyos would take charge for only the upcoming matches, but subsequent communications on social media have referred to him as the team’s head coach.
Sources indicate his appointment could be temporary, with the club expected to implement a new coaching structure before the start of the Leagues Cup in August.
Inter Miami currently sit third in the MLS Eastern Conference after seven matches this season, with Messi Argentina’s 2022 World Cup winner and eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient remaining the centerpiece of the squad.
Meanwhile, reports suggest the club are also exploring a potential move for Manchester United midfielder Casemiro as they look to strengthen their squad.
