A suspected member of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has surrendered to troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Borno State, handing over a rifle and renouncing insurgency.
The individual, identified as Bakaka Bukar, reportedly surrendered at a Forward Operating Base in Mairari, located in Guzamala Local Government Area.
Security sources said he voluntarily approached military personnel and turned in an AK-47 rifle while expressing his desire to abandon terrorist activities and return to civilian life.
Preliminary investigations indicated that Bukar had fled from an ISWAP enclave believed to be operating within the Lake Chad region. The camp was reportedly under the control of a commander known as Abu Salim.

Military authorities said the surrender reflects the growing pressure being mounted on terrorist groups through ongoing counter-insurgency operations across the North-East.
Sustained air and ground offensives have reportedly disrupted insurgent activities and encouraged more fighters to defect.
Following screening and documentation procedures, the former insurgent was transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Maiduguri, where he is expected to participate in the Federal Government’s rehabilitation and reintegration programme.
Security officials maintained that troops remain vigilant despite improvements recorded in some areas, noting that operations against terrorist groups continue as part of efforts to restore lasting peace and stability in the region.
