
Tragedy struck in Zamfara State on Monday as three police officers, including a senior bomb disposal commander, lost their lives in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion along the Anka–Bagega Road in Anka Local Government Area.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:05 p.m. on June 15, 2026, during a security operation aimed at locating and neutralising a suspected landmine reportedly planted by armed bandits operating in the area.
According to a police situation report, the team comprising personnel from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit and the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) was conducting a routine sweep in a CSK Armoured Personnel Carrier when the vehicle triggered the concealed explosive.

The explosion claimed the lives of Superintendent Abdulrazak Musa Hassan, who was leading the EOD operation, Inspector Murtala Musa of the VCRU, and Inspector Auwal Ahmad, an operative attached to the EOD Unit. All three officers were confirmed dead at the scene.
Authorities disclosed that the remains of the deceased officers would be evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Gusau for post-mortem examinations.
The Anka–Bagega corridor has remained a hotspot for insecurity in Zamfara State, with frequent reports of bandit attacks and the use of explosive devices targeting both security personnel and civilians.
Security agencies continue to intensify efforts to combat the growing threat in the region.
