A tragic incident has been reported in Zamfara State after armed bandits killed a kidnapped teacher despite allegedly receiving ransom payment for his release.
The victim, identified as Mustapha Yahaya Maru, a staff member of the Federal Government College, Anka, was abducted earlier in May while travelling along the Anka axis when armed attackers intercepted a vehicle conveying passengers.
According to reports, the assailants whisked him away alongside other victims and later contacted his family, demanding a ransom far beyond what they could initially afford.
After days of negotiation and intense efforts, the family reportedly managed to raise and deliver the requested amount in hopes of securing his safe return.
However, instead of releasing him after collecting the ransom, the bandits were said to have killed the teacher on Tuesday, sparking grief and outrage within the Maru community and beyond.

Residents described the incident as devastating, noting that it has further deepened fears over the worsening insecurity in parts of Zamfara and neighbouring states, where kidnapping for ransom has become increasingly frequent.
Security challenges in the region have continued despite ongoing military operations, with rural roads and highways remaining vulnerable to armed criminal groups.
The latest killing adds to growing concerns over the effectiveness of current counter-kidnapping strategies and the safety of commuters and educators in the region.
Authorities are yet to issue a detailed public statement on the incident at the time of this report.
