
The Ghana Football Association has officially appointed Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement released on Monday, the GFA confirmed that the decision was approved by its Executive Council in collaboration with key stakeholders.
Queiroz is expected to assume duties immediately as Ghana intensifies preparations for the global tournament, scheduled to kick off on June 11, 2026, across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
“The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, working with all key stakeholders, has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars,” the statement read.
The 73-year-old tactician brings a wealth of experience to the role, having managed teams at four FIFA World Cup tournaments.
He guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 edition, led Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 tournament

Across those campaigns, Queiroz oversaw 13 World Cup matches, recording three wins, four draws, and six defeats.
The GFA highlighted his extensive international coaching résumé, which spans multiple continents, including stints in Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar. His experience is expected to play a key role in rebuilding and strengthening the Black Stars.
Queiroz’s appointment follows the departure of Otto Addo on March 31 after a disappointing run of results.
Ghana had suffered consecutive defeats, including friendly losses to Germany and Austria, and failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations despite boasting talents like Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo.
Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, 2026, in Toronto, before facing England and Croatia in what promises to be a challenging group stage.
