A woman has died suddenly during a 17-hour flight from New York to New Zealand, despite swift efforts by crew members and medical professionals onboard to save her.
According to airline officials, the incident occurred mid-flight, prompting an immediate emergency response from both the cabin crew and volunteer doctors among the passengers. Despite their attempts to revive her, the woman was pronounced dead before the aircraft landed.
Emergency services were placed on standby ahead of the plane’s arrival in Auckland, where authorities later confirmed the death.
A coroner has since opened an investigation to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement, the airline expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and loved ones, noting that all standard emergency procedures were followed.
“Urgent assistance was provided by crew and doctors onboard, but sadly the passenger passed away,” a spokesperson said.
The tragic development comes weeks after a similar incident on a British Airways flight from Hong Kong to London, where a woman in her 60s died shortly after take-off.
In that case, the flight continued to its destination, in line with aviation protocols.
Mid-air medical emergencies, while rare, often present complex challenges for flight crews, especially on long-haul routes where immediate access to advanced medical care is limited.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the latest case.
