Several residents of Oghara in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State have been displaced after days of heavy rainfall caused severe flooding across parts of the community.
The downpour submerged houses and property, forcing some residents to evacuate their homes and leaving affected families to count their losses.
Following the incident, the Delta State Government commenced an assessment of the affected areas to determine the extent of the damage and identify communities requiring urgent intervention.
The inspection was led by the Commissioner for Bureau of Special Duties, Ejiro Terry Etacherure, alongside members of the State Emergency Management Team.
During the visit, Etacherure sympathised with affected residents and said the government would consider immediate relief measures while working towards long-term solutions to the recurring flooding problem.
He explained that the assessment was necessary to properly determine the level of destruction and guide the government’s response.
The commissioner, however, urged residents to support government efforts by keeping their surroundings clean and avoiding activities that could worsen flooding.

He specifically warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, blocking drainage channels and constructing buildings on waterways.
According to him, obstructed drainage systems can prevent stormwater from flowing freely and increase the severity of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
Etacherure also directed the Environmental Department of the Ethiope West Local Government Council to commence sensitisation campaigns across Oghara and ensure that blocked drainage channels are cleared.
A community representative, Edafe Abada, described the situation as severe, noting that several houses had been submerged and some residents had been forced to leave their homes.
Abada appealed to the state government to urgently improve drainage infrastructure and provide assistance to families whose homes and belongings were affected by the flood.
The state government said the outcome of its assessment would help determine the immediate response required and inform measures aimed at reducing the frequency and impact of flooding in Oghara.
Flooding remains a recurring challenge in parts of Delta State, particularly during periods of intense rainfall, making improved drainage infrastructure and preventive measures critical to protecting residents and property.
