
At least five people have lost their lives, while 10 others were rescued following two separate building collapses in Kumbotso and Fagge Local Government Areas of Kano State.
The incidents occurred on Saturday in the Gaida and Kurna communities, prompting emergency responses from the Kano State Fire Service after distress calls were received at approximately 2:34 p.m. and 2:40 p.m.
According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the first incident involved an incomplete building under construction near Salbas Filling Station in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area.
The collapsed structure reportedly trapped six construction workers. Firefighters from the state headquarters quickly responded and rescued two workers alive. The survivors were identified as 17-year-old Muhammad Hassan and 19-year-old Khalid Abubakar.
Four other workers were rescued unconscious but were later confirmed dead. The deceased were identified as Sunusi Surajo, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim Ibrahim, 25; and Abubakar, 30.
All six victims were taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital before being handed over to officers from the Kofar Wanbai Police Division.

In a separate incident, an Islamiyya school known as Khadija Idris Bala, located behind the Primary School in Kurna, Fagge Local Government Area, also collapsed.
Firefighters from the Kurna Fire Station rescued eight of the nine students affected by the incident. The students were between 12 and 15 years old.
However, one of the victims, 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad, was rescued unconscious and later confirmed dead.
The rescued students were subsequently handed over to the school’s headmaster, Muhammad Gambo Usman.
Authorities have launched investigations to determine the causes of both building collapses.
The Kano State Fire Service has urged building owners, contractors, and construction workers to adhere strictly to approved building standards and observe all necessary safety measures, especially during the rainy season.
The agency also encouraged residents to report building-related emergencies promptly to help emergency responders minimize casualties and prevent further loss of lives.
